Seven-stone antas (Portugal and Spain)

The seven-stone antas are a group of megalithic dolmens of distinctive design that were built in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula during the 4th millennium BC. The range of orientations of these monuments corresponds almost exactly to the range of possible sunrise positions during the year (azimuths between 61° and 128°; declinations between +23° and –-25.5°), providing remarkably strong evidence of an association between these tombs and the sun. See Hoskin 2001: 95–99.

The images in this gallery support the Extended Case Study by Juan Belmonte, Luís Tirapicos and Clive Ruggles on the UNESCO–IAU Portal to the Heritage of Astronomy.
